Agra: A 50-year-old woman died after being electrocuted in Aligarh’s Shyam Nagar locality on Wednesday morning, allegedly after electric current from a power transformer leaked into rainwater, triggering outrage among residents who blamed the power department for negligence.The victim, Rajni Sharma, had stepped out for some work when she unknowingly walked into waterlogged rainwater near the transformer that residents alleged had become electrically charged. She collapsed on the spot and remained in the water until passers-by noticed her and alerted the police.Police reached the spot and asked the power department to disconnect the electricity supply. She was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, where doctors declared her dead.
She is survived by her husband, two sons and a daughter.Residents alleged that the transformer had been leaking current and accused the power department of failing to maintain its infrastructure despite the heightened risks during the monsoon. They said the tragedy could have been prevented had timely repairs been carried out.Aligarh power department superintending engineer Anshuman Yadav said, “An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident. The victim’s family will receive compensation of Rs 5 lakh. Further action will be taken based on the inquiry findings.”Civil Lines SHO Satyaveer Singh said no complaint had been received from the family so far and further investigation is underway.
