A 19-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were arrested in Maharashtra's Parbhani after they allegedly threw a newborn baby out of a moving private travel bus. The woman had reportedly delivered the baby on board, and shortly after, the couple, claiming to be husband and wife, threw the infant out of the window.

The baby died, police confirmed.

The incident occurred around 6:30 am on Tuesday and the accused have been identified as Ritika Dhere and Altaf Shaikh, who were travelling from Pune to Parbhani.

According to police, the two were in an inter-caste relationship and had been living together. The woman went into labour during the bus journey and gave birth onboard. Upon reaching the outskirts of Pathri, the couple allegedly decided to discard the newborn.

A fellow female passenger, who witnessed the incident, immediately alerted the police. Acting swiftly, officers intercepted the bus in Parbhani and detained the accused.

A case has been registered at Pathri police station under Sections 94(3) and 94(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to the concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body.

The woman has been admitted to Parbhani Government Hospital for treatment, while the man remains in police custody.
