A 45-year-old woman, her husband, and their son were killed when the SUV they were travelling in hit an empty tanker lorry on Arakkonam - Kancheepuram Main Road at Pallur village near Arakkonam town in Ranipet on Thursday.

Police said the deceased has been identified as V. Latha, her husband, K. Venketasan (48), and son, V. Gowtham (21). While Latha died on the spot, the others died on the way to hospital. Initial inquiry revealed that Venketasan was running a four-wheeler workshop in Arakkonam town. Along with his family members, Venketasan was driving his SUV to Kancheepuram to visit temples when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle and hit a tanker lorry from behind on the stretch.

In the impact, the tanker lorry overturned and fell into the open area away from the carriageway. Lorry driver, V. Mahesh (34), also sustained minor injuries. Immediately, other motorists and passersby rushed to rescue the injured persons. They also alerted firefighters and Nemili police, who rushed to the spot.

Injured persons were admitted to the Government District Headquarters Hospital in Kancheepuram where doctors declared brought dead. Police removed the mangled SUV from the carriageway to resume traffic movement, which was affected for nearly an hour on the route. A case was registered and further probe is underway.
