A woman’s body wrapped in a blanket was found lying on the side of Yamuna Expressway in Agra in Uttar Pradesh, leading to the arrest of her live-in partner after police used artificial intelligence-based tools to establish the identity of the victim.
The case came to light on February 6 after a passerby spotted what appeared to be a body lying along the expressway in the Khandauli area and alerted the police. A team from the local police station reached the spot soon after.
They found the body of a woman tightly wrapped in a blanket and dumped on the roadside, with visible injuries on her neck and face. Investigators said the nature of the injuries indicated she may have been killed at another location and her body later brought and abandoned in Agra.
A dog squad was called to the scene. A forensic team was also summoned to conduct an examination of the site and the body.
The initial challenge for investigators was to identify the woman, as no identification documents were found on her body. However, officers noticed two words written on her hand: “RS" and “Sunny."
Police circulated photographs of the unidentified body to police stations across the region and outside it, seeking to match the victim with any recent missing persons reports. However, despite the efforts, no response helped establish her identity.
With conventional methods yielding no result, officers turned to artificial technology.
Police used AI-based tools to digitally reconstruct the woman’s facial features by redrawing the image of the body. As part of the process, her eyes were digitally opened to create a more lifelike appearance, and the enhanced image was then processed through an application to generate a clearer facial profile.
This AI-assisted reconstruction formed a recognisable face.
The digital reconstruction provided a crucial breakthrough, leading to the identification of the woman as Sonali, a 25-year-old resident of Mahoba, NDTV reported.
During the course of the inquiry, the name “Sunny" emerged as a person of interest. The police eventually managed to track him down and arrest him.
During interrogation, police said the accused disclosed that Sonali had run away to live with him and that the two were in a live-in relationship. Investigators said Sunny wanted to get rid of her and therefore decided to kill her.
Police said Sunny killed Sonali, wrapped her body in a blanket, and transported it to the Yamuna Expressway, where he dumped it in the Khandauli area.
