Detailed Schedule For Indian Events At The World Athletics Championship 2025

Indian men’s ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be heading the Indian contingent confirmed for the World Athletics Championship 2025, starting on September 13 in Tokyo, Japan. The marquee sporting event provides a host of other Indian athletic stars to showcase their mettle on foreign soil. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced 13 male and six female athletes will represent the country at the event that concludes on September 21.

Having struck a career-high 90m mark earlier in the year, Neeraj remains India’s biggest hope for a major breakthrough in the Japanese capital. The javelin great qualified for the World Athletics Championship 2025 via a wild card as the defending champion, having also surpassed the 85.50m entry standard earlier in the season. Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh, who qualified through world rankings, will also represent the Indian javelin at this event.

Odisha’s sprinter Animesh Kujur will also aim to continue his inspiring run. A national record-holder, Kujur made the country proud by becoming the first Indian male sprinter to qualify for the World Championships. India also secured four direct qualifications through entry standards, with Avinash Sable (3000m steeplechase), Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), Gulveer Singh (5000m) and Praveen Chitravel (triple jump) all receiving automatic marks. Sable, however, won’t be participating in the event due to an injury.

A best of 8.13m was enough for long jumper Murali Sreeshankar to secure her berth for the World Athletics Championships 2025 as she made a terrific comeback after undergoing a knee surgery and winning five competitions since July. Annu Rani is another player making her comeback after a 62.59m throw in Poland, her best in two years. Taking part in the women’s 35km, Ankita Dhyani (3000m steeplechase), Pooja (1500m) and race walker Priyanka Goswami will also feature at the much-anticipated event, where India stands the chance to flex their rise as a sporting nation.
