Neeraj Chopra leads the India’s 19-member squad comprises of 14 men and five women across 15 events at the World Athletics Championship 2025, beginning on September 13 in Tokyo, Japan.
This prestigious event offers a platform for other Indian athletic stars to demonstrate their skills on an international stage.
Having reached a career-high 90m mark earlier this year, Neeraj remains India’s best hope for a significant breakthrough in Tokyo. The javelin star qualified for the World Athletics Championship 2025 via a wild card as the defending champion, having also surpassed the 85.50m entry standard earlier in the season. Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh, who qualified through world rankings, will also represent India in javelin at this event.
Odisha’s sprinter Animesh Kujur aims to continue his inspiring performance. A national record-holder, Kujur made history as the first Indian male sprinter to qualify for the World Championships. India also secured four direct qualifications through entry standards, with Avinash Sable (3000m steeplechase), Parul Chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), Gulveer Singh (5000m), and Praveen Chitravel (triple jump) all earning automatic spots. However, Sable will not participate in the event due to an injury.
Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured her spot for the World Athletics Championships 2025 with a best of 8.13m, making a remarkable comeback after knee surgery and winning five competitions since July. Annu Rani is another athlete making her comeback after a 62.59m throw in Poland, her best in two years. Competing in the women’s 35km race walk, Ankita Dhyani (3000m steeplechase), Pooja (1500m), and race walker Priyanka Goswami will also feature in this highly anticipated event, where India has the opportunity to showcase its growing prominence as a sporting nation.
