Melissa Jefferson Wooden clinched the gold in the women’s 100 metres sprint event on Sunday at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 24-year-old American clocked the joint third-fastest time in history with her effort of 10.61 seconds in a new championship record. Jamaican youngster Tina Clayton took silver in 10.76sec with Olympic champion Julien Alfred third in 10.84sec.

There was no medal farewell in the individual event for five-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The 38-year-old Jamaican legend, with her hair dyed in the national flag colours for her last major individual final, couldn’t keep pace with her younger rivals and finished a respectable sixth.
Jefferson-Wooden, who finished a distant third behind Alfred in last year’s Olympic final, made a strong start this time. In contrast, Alfred, starting next to her, seemed sluggish out of the blocks.
It was two-time under-20 world champion Clayton, whose twin sister Tia had better form on the circuit but underperformed in the national trials, who challenged Jefferson-Wooden. However, the American seized her moment and claimed the spotlight.
Alfred managed to recover slightly and took the bronze, though she didn’t display the same form as in the semi-finals earlier on Sunday. Jefferson-Wooden and Clayton celebrated, but Alfred looked dejected as she wandered to the changing rooms with the Saint Lucia flag draped over her shoulders.

Defending champion Sha’Carri Richardson, who barely made it to the final as one of the two fastest losers, finished fifth and was never a contender in this race.
