World Environment Day celebrated with rallies, tree plantation

Trichy: World Environment Day was observed across the district on Friday with widespread tree plantation drives, awareness programmes, and community initiatives focused on conservation and sustainability.The forest department organised major events across Trichy and central districts. A highlight was the special celebration at the Tropical Butterfly Conservatory in Srirangam. Around 200 students, teachers, and forest staff participated in the event. An awareness rally was conducted around the park where participants carried placards and raised slogans promoting tree planting, plastic avoidance, and biodiversity conservation.

Following the rally, saplings were planted.Forest range officer M Janani delivered a special address on environmental conservation, explaining the life cycle of butterflies, their role in pollination, and their importance in maintaining ecological balance. Newly emerged butterflies reared in the conservatory were released into their natural habitat. Participants also took a pledge to protect the environment and build a greener future.

In Nagarvan Upper Anicut range, students from Vageesha Vidhyalaya, Melur, led by range officer V P Subramaniam, planted trees.At Bhel Trichy, executive director K Ashok highlighted the unit’s green initiatives including large-scale plantations, rainwater harvesting, use of treated water, and solar power generation. Ashok administered a pledge and inaugurated a tree plantation drive.Additionally, Thanneer Ammaippu, Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam, and Ponmalai Golden Athletics Club organised a cleanup drive at Ponmalai maidan to remove plastic waste.In Madurai, Chennai municipal administrative director P Madhusudhan Reddy planted saplings on the Madurai corporation office premises.
