The open water races at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore will be conducted on Wednesday after being postponed twice because of poor water quality, as announced by the governing body, World Aquatics.

The women’s 10km race was rescheduled to Wednesday morning, but organisers have now confirmed it will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

The men’s 10km race, all set for Wednesday morning, has been moved to Wednesday afternoon.

World Aquatics reported that tests at the Sentosa Island course showed improved water quality, though it still exceeded acceptable levels.

The governing body had stated that the new race times were contingent on satisfactory test results. They later confirmed that both races would proceed after further testing on Wednesday morning showed significant improvement.

“Regular water quality monitoring and testing continue throughout the competition period to ensure athlete safety, with the health and safety of all participants guiding all competition-related decisions," World Aquatics said in a statement.

The governing body noted that E. coli levels ranged from “good" to “excellent" according to World Aquatics and World Health Organisation standards.

Water quality concerns were also an issue for events held in the River Seine at last year’s Paris Olympics.

Out of 11 days of scheduled events and training in its murky waters, only five were approved.

Despite a 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) upgrade to improve Paris’s sewerage and water treatment system, the river continued to struggle with pollution problems.
