Indian wrestlers will start their campaign at the World Wrestling Championships from Saturday in Zagreb, Croatia. India’s best medal bets will be Aman Sehrawat in men’s 57kg category, Antim Panghal in women’s 53kg category and Sujeet Kalkal in men’s 65kg category.

2024 Paris Olympic medalist, Aman Sehrawat will be aiming to clinch his first-ever world championships medal. He is the third-seeded wrestler in the men’s 57 kg category and hence will avoid the top wrestlers till the semi-finals.

In the 65kg category, Sujeet Kalkal has a tough draw. He will be playing the round of 32 bout against Turkiye’s Cavit Acar. But going forward in the tournament, he might face Paris Olympic finalist Rahman Amouzad of Iran in the quarter-finals.

The Olympian and former silver medalist Deepak Punia is unseeded in the men’s 92 kg category and will begin his campaign with a bout against Austria’s Benjamil Griel, but if he clinches a win in that bout, he will face the 4th-seeded Osman Nurmagomedov of Azerbaijan in the second round. For a shot at a medal, Deepak will need to overcome three-time world medalist Osman.

The women’s freestyle events will start on Monday, where apart from Antim, eyes will be on under-20 world champion Tapsya Gahlawat (57kg) and double under-20 world medallist Priya Malik (76kg).

In the last two editions of the World Championships, India has won one medal each with Antim winning the bronze in 53kg in 2023 and Mansi Ahlawat winning bronze medal in 59kg last year.
