A brief exchange between US President Donald Trump and an Indian journalist at the White House has sparked curiosity online after Trump described the reporter as “central casting" in a phrase that has become a recurring part of his political vocabulary.

Responding to a question on trade ties with India, Trump told an Indian reporter: “Are you from India? I thought you were from Germany? “I’m only kidding. You’re central casting, OK? That’s a very good thing."

While many viewers were left wondering what exactly the term meant, it is not the first time Trump has used it. Over the years, he has deployed the same phrase for everyone, from military generals and police officers to world leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping.

What Does ‘Central Casting’ Mean?

The term originates from Central Casting, the Hollywood company that has supplied actors and extras for films and television productions for more than a century.

In American political and media parlance, saying someone is “straight out of Central Casting" means they perfectly fit the image people associate with a particular role. It is essentially a way of saying someone looks, sounds, and carries themselves exactly as one would imagine a person in that position should.

So, when Trump told the Indian journalist that he was “central casting", he was effectively saying the reporter looked like the ideal Indian TV journalist.

A Phrase Trump Uses Frequently

The expression has long been one of Trump’s favourite compliments.

In May this year, while discussing Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity that if Hollywood were casting someone to play China’s leader in a movie, Xi would be the obvious choice. “If you went to Hollywood and looked for a leader of China to play a role in a movie, he’s Central Casting," Trump said, adding that Xi possessed the appearance and presence people would associate with a Chinese leader.

Trump has used similar language for military officers, law enforcement officials and political figures throughout his public career, often focusing on what he sees as their commanding presence or television appeal.

The episode also offers a glimpse into how Trump evaluates public figures. Before entering politics, Trump spent years in New York real estate, celebrity culture and reality television. As a result, he frequently praises people by saying they “look the part".

That helps explain why a Hollywood term like “Central Casting" keeps resurfacing in his speeches and interviews. For Trump, it is shorthand for someone who looks perfectly suited to the role they occupy.

The Phrase Has A Long Political History

Trump did not invent the term. American politicians have been using “straight out of Central Casting" for decades.

Former US President Ronald Reagan, himself a former Hollywood actor. was known to use the expression. Political commentators in Washington have long employed it to describe politicians who perfectly fit a stereotype or public image.

What Trump did was popularise it again by using it far more frequently than most modern politicians.
