Social media has made vacationing aspirational. Travel is now an aesthetic and airports are locations for content. These factors combined have promoted our luggage bags from being a functional commodity to a statement accessory.
Today, travellers are putting real thought into choosing bags that not only offer utility and convenience, but also reflect their personal style and identity. “I treat it like a part of my outfit,” says Srishti Singh Bhatia (35), a digital creator from Delhi who mostly chooses between her three go-to travel pieces: the Louis Vuitton Neverfull, a Givenchy canvas tote, and Balmain carry-on. “My travel bags show that I am someone who likes pieces that are simple, reliable, and timeless, not trenddriven.”

Travel bags are a big part of my overall look, especially at the airport. It reflects that I value both aesthetics and practicality. I like pieces that are timeless, durable, and functional, but also visually appealing

Luggage today is also about expressing personal style
According to experts, social media and the boom in aspirational luxury has led to consumers moving towards well-designed, thoughtfully made pieces that reflect confidence and clarity in choice.Anuj Sawhney, managing director of a luggage brand, shares, “Earlier, luggage was mainly bought for utility, durability and visible branding. Today, for an image-conscious generation, luggage is also about style and presentation.
Whether at airports, weddings, or on social media, people want bags that reflect their personality and look good in public, along with being practical.”Echoing this, Tanisha Jatia, founder & brand lead of a luggage brand, says, “Someone who chooses a luxury travel bag like the heritage monogram Louis Vuitton trunk, is making a statement about legacy and legibility. They want to be recognised. Then there’s the consumer who wants the same level of quality and craft but without the logo doing the talking.
The bag is impeccable, the materials are considered. It reflects a quieter confidence — still a significant investment, just a quieter one.
Then there are customers who don’t perform restraint. They want a bag with colour, character and a personality that matches theirs.”
Every colour reveals a different personality
Bhaskar Patil*, team leader who works at the front office of a five-star hotel in Mumbai, shares that it often helps him to gauge the guests’ personalities by looking at their bags and accordingly serves them.
“Guests who arrive with blue, black, or neutral-coloured trolley bags often display a mature, serious demeanour, while those with bright-coloured bags usually seem to be travelling for leisure. Some enter with high-end luxury luggage like LV, while others carry first copies, but the difference is easy to spot.
Over time, I’ve started associating bag colours and styles with certain personality traits that help me understand and serve guests better.”Rightly so, Naina Parekh, co-founder of a premium travel luggage brand, tells us, “A travel bag is no longer just functional; it reflects personal style, especially in high-visibility spaces like airports. With increased global exposure, consumers are far more intentional about which bag they carry. A well-crafted premium luggage piece signals taste, confidence, and a curated lifestyle.”
Premium consumers tend to view luxury travel bags as an extension of their personal style and status, using them to express a sense of sophistication, success, and attention to detail. While durability and functionality remain important, the appeal also lies in owning something that feels aspirational, fashion-forward, and aligned with global trends
