New Delhi: YouTube has officially announced that background play and downloads are going to be added to its Premium Lite subscription. This means that the users will now be able to download the videos for offline viewing and continue to listen to the video’s audio even when the screen is locked or while switching between other applications.

This latest plan is priced at Rs 89 per month, and it offers ad-free viewing for most of the videos on the platform. It also works across devices, including phones, laptops, and Smart TVs. This latest upgrade is now rolling out in all the markets where Premium Lite is available.

This recent update comes shortly after YouTube tightened its browser-based workaround that enables free background play and began showing the content is unavailable errors to some users who were using ad blockers. Those Premium Lite users will also get the offline downloads and background play starting from now and over the coming weeks.

Background play lets users continue listening to the video audio even when they are operating other applications or locking their screen. Offline downloads enable users to save videos on their devices so they can watch them later without an internet connection.

YouTube added that users who want completely ad-free viewing, including music content and YouTube Music Premium, should choose the regular YouTube Premium plan rather than the. YouTube also introduced Premium Lite in India last year as a lower-cost option for users who mainly wanted an ad-free experience.

This plan had some limitations; it did not offer offline downloads and a background play feature. Ads will continue to appear on Shorts, music content, and in areas like search and browsing. This actually made it more different from the standard YouTube Premium plan, which also removes the ad from the music and offers uninterrupted music streaming to the users.
