 Here’s what it is

YouTube is working on a new AI-powered feature designed to enhance the user experience. The online streaming platform is now testing its new AI-powered conversational search tool called Ask YouTube.

Instead of relying on traditional keyword searches, users can type natural language queries and receive results that blend AI-generated text summaries, short clips, and long videos with highlighted segments. This new feature is designed to make search feel more like a conversation enabling users to ask follow-up questions and also refine results without starting over. The new Ask YouTube tool is available via YouTube Labs, the platform’s experimental program.

Access is limited to Premium subscribers in the U.S., who can opt in via the Labs website. The testing period runs until June 8, 2026, giving YouTube time to gather feedback before considering a wider rollout. “Try experimental new features. For a limited time, eligible Premium members have early access to try out new features.

As a Premium member, you’ll also enjoy watching YouTube ad-free, downloads, and more,” said YouTube.

Examples of how to use YouTube Ask feature

YouTube has shared sample prompts to showcase the tool’s capabilities, such as:* “Plan a 3-day road trip between San Francisco and Santa Barbara.”* “Unique ideas for a backyard water feature.”* “Plan a living room redesign using thrifted items.”* “How to make a traditional French omelet.”These examples highlight how Ask YouTube can support lifestyle planning, DIY projects, and instructional searches in a more intuitive way.

Other AI experiments

Ask YouTube is part of a broader wave of AI experiments under YouTube Labs. Other features currently being tested include:* Beyond the Beat (YouTube Music): Adds AI-generated insights when listening to radio or mixes.* VibeCheck (YouTube Shorts): Provides AI coaching tips before publishing short-form videos.
