The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government immediately complete the long-pending Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Project, alleging that the interests of the drought-prone region are being neglected by the coalition government.
The demand was raised at a meeting of the party’s Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Project Action Committee held at the YSRCP central office in Tadepalli on Monday.
Addressing the media later, former Minister and committee convener Sake Sailajanath alleged that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was neglecting irrigation and development projects in the Rayalaseema region. He said the lift irrigation project was nearing completion, but the government had failed to allocate the funds required to make it operational.
Mr. Sailajanath claimed that nearly 90% of the work on the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme had been completed during the previous YSRCP government and that only limited additional expenditure was needed to finish the remaining works. However, he alleged that the present government had deliberately delayed the project despite repeated appeals from leaders of the region.
Expressing concern over the impact of upstream projects in neighbouring Telangana and Karnataka on the availability of Krishna river water, he said Rayalaseema could face severe water shortages in the future if the lift irrigation project was not completed.
The YSRCP leader said the party would launch a campaign to highlight the issue and press for the completion of pending irrigation projects across Greater Rayalaseema. As part of the initiative, party leaders would visit major unfinished projects in Nellore and Anantapur districts in the first phase.
YSRCP State coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, Kakani Govardhan Reddy and other members of the committee attended the meeting.
