Most employees expect a promotion or a bonus when they hit a major milestone at work. This is the season of incentives, after all. But for one Zerodha employee, losing 30 kg brought him something way more memorable: ₹2.5 lakh straight from Zerodha’s co-founder and CEO, Nithin Kamath.Sounds unbelievable, right? The story is going viral on social media for the same reason — not just because of the money, but because of what it says about drive, motivation, and the sheer impact of a well-placed bet! And due to the attention it has drawn to the health of a corporate employee. In a world where most of us are glued to our desks all day, fighting stress and inactivity, this guy's transformation reminds people that scoring health wins can feel just as big as work wins.
What happened?
Nitin Kamath, Zerodha CEO, actually shared the whole thing online. He shared a screenshot of an Instagram post by Rohit Agarwala, who works as a content and media strategist at Zerodha, and wrote: “I lost a fitness bet, and I’m happy I lost this one.”What went behind this “bet”?It actually started pretty simply: a fitness challenge between Kamath and this employee. If the employee could drop a dramatic amount of weight in one year, he’d walk away with ₹2.5 lakh.
At first, it was probably a fun wager — almost like a spark of motivation and hardly anything more than that. Nobody probably even took it that seriously. But over twelve months, it turned into something big. The employee lost a jaw-dropping 30 kg.Kamath didn’t just quietly give him the money. He celebrated the win in public, actually sounding proud to have lost this particular bet. Talk about an encouraging boss!

Behind the weight loss journey
Rohit shared his story online too, calling the weight loss his “biggest flex”, which, for those not up on internet slang, just means the thing he’s proudest of.He added that the money was not the biggest reward. “The money is secondary. It’s the push to take care of my health and lose 30kgs in the last year that has been the most rewarding. I don’t think any other place can give you this kind of an opportunity @zerodhaonline,” Agarwala wrote.People on the internet agreed: losing 30 kg was indeed a flex to brag about. In a separate post shared on Instagram, Rohit revealed how, around 6 months earlier, he had taken a bet with 15 colleagues to go from 95 kg to 75 kg by January. Per that video, the group collectively wagered about ₹1 lakh against him — that was their way to encourage unhealthy employees to focus on their health.

So, it’s no surprise that, to him, “Becoming fit felt like a dream.” He gave due credit to Zerodha’s culture for helping him stay on track. Rohit added, “My company is very health-focused and it comes from the top. This was the change I needed in my life, which pushed me to take this seriously.”As per his health journey, Rohit had started his fitness journey at 104 kg in April.
By the time the bet began in June, he had already brought his weight down to 95 kg. In January this year, he weighed 74.5 kg, surpassing his original target.
How the internet responded
Social media, of course, loves such success stories. The internet immediately jumped in to cheer for both the employee’s willpower and Kamath’s open-hearted payoff. People joked that losing 30 kg and earning ₹2.5 lakh is the best ROI you can get. One user commented, “Here health benefits are more than the bet amount.
Infact, You got much more in return,” and they indeed were right. But what people pointed out and cheered for more was the compnay culture that enabled such a push. One user rightly said, “Thats amazing! Such kind of moves help people to remain motivated for long time.”
Nithin Kamath's long-running focus on employee health
Those familiar with Kamath's approach to workplace wellness were not entirely surprised by the challenge, though. The Zerodha co-founder has constantly been insistent on encouraging employees to prioritize physical health.Even in earlier initiatives, he has offered bonuses linked to fitness goals and publicly discussed the importance of staying active, especially in a work-from-home world where prolonged sitting has become increasingly common. Back in 2022, Zerodha introduced wellness incentives tied to body mass index (BMI) targets, with employees eligible for bonus payments if they met certain health benchmarks.Kamath’s philosophy is simple: work hard, but work out harder — in order to stay healthy. One social media user even recognized that pattern and said, “Lost the bet but won at life! Congrats Rohit on the insane 30kg transformation – that's the real victory here. Nithin bhai, best way to lose money ever. This is what health challenges should be about. Massive respect to both of you.”
