While turning down Mahanta’s bail application, the court said the offences alleged against her carry punishment up to death or life imprisonment

Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19.
A sessions court in Guwahati on Friday rejected the bail pleas of musician Amritprava Mahanta and two personal security officers of late singer Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore in September 2025.
Mahanta has been charged with murder, while the two PSOs face charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
While turning down Mahanta’s bail application, the court said the offences alleged against her carry punishment up to death or life imprisonment. The judge observed that the prosecution’s submissions “reflects a prima facie case against Mahanta for conspiracy with prime accused persons in connection with this case and actively participating in that conspiracy, which facilitated the death of Zubeen Garg", according to a report by the Indian Express.
Police have named four people as accused in the murder case linked to Garg’s death. Apart from Mahanta, the accused include North East India Festival Singapore organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and co-musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami. A fifth accused, Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg, has been booked for culpable homicide.
During an earlier hearing on January 22, Shyamkanu Mahanta and Sandipan Garg withdrew their bail petitions, citing “certain developments and personal and legal reasons". Siddharth Sharma and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami are yet to apply for bail.
According to the prosecution, Garg died after losing consciousness while swimming during a yacht outing in Singapore on September 19, 2025. He was taken to Singapore General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead due to “drowning". Later post-mortem reports found high levels of alcohol in his body. Mahanta, Goswami, Sharma and Sandipan Garg were present on the yacht at the time.
In its chargesheet, the Assam Police accused Mahanta of “causing excessive drinking of alcohol by the victim" and of failing to inform others about Garg’s condition. She was also accused of “encouraging the victim to swim without a life jacket" despite his physical state.
In her bail plea, Mahanta’s lawyer argued that she had travelled to Singapore at Garg’s request and considered him a “fatherly figure". The petition stated that she was informed about sharing a hotel room with the singer only after arriving there and had no option to object in a foreign country. It also claimed she was unaware of the yacht trip until a day earlier.
