A 10-year-old tribal girl in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district was allegedly tortured and burnt with a red-hot metal road over the suspicion of stealing a mobile phone.

The child, identified as Gandala Chenchamma, was reportedly forced to admit to the theft despite denying any involvement.

The incident took place in Kakarladibba village. Chenchamma, who had lost both her parents, was living under the care of her maternal aunt. Locals alleged that a few neighbours brutally assaulted the girl and inflicted burn injuries using a hot iron rod or ladle. The child reportedly suffered severe physical trauma before being rescued by villagers who heard her cries.

She was taken to a government hospital for treatment. Police have registered an FIR in the case and detained multiple individuals, including her aunt, for questioning.

The YSR Congress Party condemned the incident, calling it a “deeply disturbing” act that has “shaken the conscience of the state.” In a post on X, the party said the incident reflected a breakdown of law and order under the TDP-led coalition government. "The safety of our children, especially from vulnerable communities, must be protected at all costs," the statement read, adding that justice for Chenchamma must not be delayed.
