The police have detained 12 people so far in connection with the incident that took place during the French annual street music festival.

As many as 145 people were stabbed with needles during the French annual street music festival last week, the police said, adding that at least 12 suspects have been detained in connection with the incident.

This comes as millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for Fête de la Musique, as authorities reported “unprecedented crowds" in Paris. Before the party, several posts on social media had called for women to be targeted during the event, the news agency AFP reported.

According to the country’s interior ministry, there were 145 victims in the incident across the country, out of which 13 such cases were reported in the capital city – Paris.

Officials did not confirm whether these incidents involved what’s known as needle spiking — where drugs like Rohypnol or GHB are injected to make victims confused or unconscious, leaving them vulnerable to sexual assault.

“Some victims were taken to the hospital for toxicological tests," the ministry said.

In Paris, investigations have begun after three people — including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man — reported being stabbed in separate incidents across the city, prosecutors said, adding that all three reported feeling unwell.

Across France, 12 people have been arrested, according to the interior ministry. A police source said that among them were four individuals in the southwestern city of Angoulême, suspected of targeting around 50 victims.

In addition to these suspects, more than 370 people were taken into custody during the festival for various offenses, including nearly 90 arrests in Paris.

Fourteen people taking part in the celebrations were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old who was taken to the hospital after being found on the street with stab wounds to his lower stomach. Thirteen police officers were also injured.

Despite this, the Paris police chief, Laurent Nunez, said that “no major incident has been reported."
