A 15-day programme for the empowerment of farmers, Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, began at Pattimpalem village of Tadepalligudem constituency, West Godavari district, on Thursday.
On the occasion, Dr. YSR Horticulture University Vice-Chancellor K. Gopal stressed the importance of reducing pesticide usage and promoting alternative biocontrol-based management. He emphasised the horticulture sector’s importance in promoting nutritional security and improving farmers’ income. He also highlighted the need to encourage the balanced use of fertilizers and crop selection based on soil health cards.
J.V. Prasad, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, AP-KVKs, ICAR-ATARI, Hyderabad, said that the coordinated efforts of scientists and allied line departments will address all field-based problems in the ensuing kharif season. He highlighted the various government schemes available to farmers and the need for their wider reach.
M. Seshu Madhav, Director, ICAR-NIRCA, Rajahmundry, spoke on the need for value addition in turmeric, ashwagandha, and castor crops, and also advocated for promoting natural farming methods.
K. Suresh, Director, ICAR-IIOPR, Pedavegi, highlighted the necessity of oil palm cultivation in the present oil import scenario. He also emphasised promoting smart farming using ICT tools and modern equipment.
B. Govinda Rajulu, Director of Extension, Dr. YSRHU, Venkataramannagudem, highlighted the role of KVKs in technology transfer and the importance of drones in reducing manual labour.
The Director of Research, K.T. Venkata Ramana, scientists from ANGRAU, officials from the Agriculture, Horticulture, and allied departments, along with 400 farmers and village leaders, participated in the programme.
