Sixteen men from Karnal district deported from the United States have been reunited with their families, as police investigate the illegal networks they allegedly used to reach the US after paying large sums of money.

Sixteen men from Haryana's Karnal district who were deported from the United States have been handed over to their families, police said on Sunday. According to officials, the youths had gone to the US through illegal channels after paying large sums of money.

DSP Sandeep informed that the flight carrying the deported Indians arrived in Delhi on Saturday night following which the officials brought the group from Delhi to Karnal. All 16 have been handed over to their families and police are checking how they travelled to the US.

Earlier in July, the the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has informed that US has deported 1,563 Indian nationals since the day Donald Trump assumed office as President for a second term. Most of the deportees have been sent back on commercial flights.

"Since 20 January of this year, till yesterday, some 1,563 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States so far. Most of these Indian nationals have come by commercial flight," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a briefing.

Data presented by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament earlier showed that the United States deported 6,135 Indians during Donald Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021. The highest number of deportations was recorded in 2019, when 2,042 Indians were sent back. In other years, 1,024 were deported in 2017, 1,180 in 2018, and 1,889 in 2020.

Notably, during Joe Biden's presidency, the number of deported Indian nationals dropped to around 3,000.
