A 16-year-old girl in Thane, Maharashtra, allegedly died by suicide after her family opposed her relationship with a male cousin.

A 16-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide at her home in Maharashtra’s Thane district after her family opposed her relationship with a male cousin, police said on Thursday.

According to an official from Tilak Nagar police station, the incident took place on Tuesday at Khambalpada in the Dombivli area, news agency PTI reported.

The official said that the girl had confided in her family about her love affair with her maternal uncle’s 25-year-old son, a resident of Ulhasnagar in Thane.

Her parents strongly objected to the relationship and tried to reason with her, but to no avail, he told PTI.

The official stated that the girl allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling in her home on Tuesday afternoon, leaving her family in shock.

She was later rushed to the hospital by her family members, where doctors declared her dead, he said. The body was subsequently sent to a government hospital for postmortem.

According to the official, the police have registered an accidental death case, PTI reported.
