Thirty-four years after a violent attack shook a village in Bihar’s Vaishali district, an 84-year-old man walked out of a courtroom as the sole surviving convict in the case.

Supported by two people as he left the court premises, Deep Rai’s frail appearance quickly drew attention online. The viral video became a stark reminder of how much time had passed between the crime and the verdict.

When the case began in 1992, Rai was one of five accused named in a complaint filed by Judhavanpur resident Adalat Rai. The complainant alleged that the group, armed with weapons, arrived at his house following a dispute, opened fire and launched an attack on him and his wife.

A police case was registered, and a chargesheet followed in 1993. But the trial continued for decades.

Over the course of the proceedings, four of the five accused died. By the time the court delivered its verdict, Deep Rai was the only one left standing trial.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Manoj Kumar Tiwari found Rai guilty under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with a deadly weapon) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 134 of the Arms Act.

The court has convicted Rai, but the punishment is yet to be announced. Sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday.

For a case that began in May 1992, the verdict arrived only after the passage of more than three decades, long after most of those accused in the matter were no longer alive.
