England's Harry Brook scored a remarkable 135 runs with 11 sixes, but it wasn't enough as New Zealand secured a four-wicket victory in the first one-day international.New Zealand achieved their target of 224-6 with over 13 overs to spare at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten at 78, hitting the winning runs.New Zealand's Zakary Foulkes delivered an impressive bowling performance, taking 4-41 and reducing England to 10-4 and then 56-6 in the early stages.Brook's career-best ODI performance included three consecutive sixes against Jacob Duffy to reach his century. He was the last batsman dismissed after facing 101 balls. This innings surpassed his previous best of 110 not out against Australia at Chester-le-Street last year."I felt like I was in good touch. Obviously we didn't get off to a great start and I tried to take it upon myself to have a counterpunch," Brook said."I tried to get us to a decent total that we could defend. I thought we started really nicely with the ball but we just struggled to take wickets throughout the middle."Jamie Overton contributed with 46 runs, his career-best, forming an 87-run partnership with Brook for the seventh wicket.

Matt Henry claimed 2-53 and dismissed Jamie Smith with the first ball after England was sent in to bat. Foulkes then removed Ben Duckett and Joe Root in his first over."They were outstanding. We know Matt Henry can do that but I think Zak was outstanding the way he swung it," said New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner."We knew we had to keep taking wickets. Brooky's a little bit earlier would have been nice, he was outstanding today."New Zealand's innings started poorly at 24-3, with Brydon Carse taking 3-45. Kane Williamson was dismissed for his first golden duck in 166 ODIs during his first international match in nearly eight months.Mitchell formed strong partnerships with Tom Latham (24) and Michael Bracewell (51). He survived a dropped catch when he was at 33 runs. The series continues with matches in Hamilton on Wednesday and Wellington on Saturday. England previously won the T20 series 1-0, with two matches cancelled due to rain.
