Tirunelveli: Two elderly people were killed and six others, including five school students, were injured after a car rammed into an auto rickshaw on the national highway near the Nanguneri toll plaza in Tirunelveli district on Friday evening.Police said the auto rickshaw was ferrying students of a private school in Nanguneri towards Tirunelveli. When it came near the toll plaza, a car coming from Nagercoil hit the auto from behind. Following the impact, the car driver lost control over the vehicle, and it overturned. Radha, 72, of Nagercoil died on the spot, while Natarajan, 70, also from Nagercoil, suffered grievous injuries and succumbed while being taken to a hospital.The car driver, Rajamohan, suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Tirunelveli Govt Medical College Hospital. Five school students in the autorickshaw sustained minor injuries. Rajamohan and the students were stable, police said. The bodies of the deceased were sent to the hospital for autopsy.Traffic on the busy highway was briefly disrupted following the accident until the car was removed from the spot. The Nanguneri police registered a case and are investigating.
