Two people were killed and several others critically injured when gunfire erupted during a large weekend party in southeastern North Carolina, local authorities said.

According to officials, 13 people were shot at the gathering held in a rural area outside Maxton- about 150 kilometres southwest of Raleigh, near the South Carolina border.

Police described the late-night shooting as an “isolated incident," adding that there was no ongoing threat to the wider community.

More than 150 people reportedly fled the scene before law enforcement officers arrived. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist investigators.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and no arrests have been made so far. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Homicide detectives and multiple law enforcement units were on-site Saturday, collecting evidence as the investigation continues.
