In a haunting coincidence that has left a village in mourning, a father died on the same date his son passed away two years ago, deepening the anguish of a family already devastated by loss.
On June 2, 2023, 25-year-old Sanjay Maiti from Patpur village, under the Sauri Gram Panchayat in Odisha, was among the many lives lost in the Coromandel Express train accident at Bahnaga station near Balasore. Sanjay had been travelling to Chennai in search of work when the tragic derailment occurred.
In the aftermath of that tragedy, the government provided a compensatory job to his father, Deepak Maiti, who began working as a home guard at the Jora Geriya outpost under Belda Police Station in West Bengal.
But fate dealt the grieving family yet another cruel blow.
On the morning of June 2, 2025 — exactly two years after his son’s death — Deepak Maiti reportedly choked on a betel nut while chewing paan as he prepared for duty. Despite urgent efforts to save him, he died on the way to Agra Superspeciality Hospital.
The eerie timing of both deaths has left the local community stunned. “Two years ago today, Deepak Maiti’s son died in the Coromandel Express accident. The sudden death of Deepak Babu on the same day is heart-wrenching," said Dilip Samanta, head of the Sauri Gram Panchayat.
Deepak Maiti is survived by his wife and daughter. The district police have expressed their condolences and promised full support to the bereaved family. “The incident is deeply painful. We will ensure every possible assistance is provided," a police official said.
