The Karur police on Thursday arrested 10 persons and seized 26 vehicles on the charge of smuggling sand.
Acting on inputs that a special team carried out a surprise check in the early hours along the banks of the Cauvery, the police team found that several lorries were loading sand and several others were waiting for their turn at a stock point in Manmangalam. The police personnel subsequently seized 26 vehicles. Of them, 12 were laden with sand. Others were waiting to load.
A senior police officer told The Hindu that no one had permit to transport sand from Karur as no quarry had been functioning in the district. A group of persons had allegedly mined sand from the Cauvery illegally. Further inquiries were on with the arrested persons.
