A bus carrying 42 students and staff from the Higher Secondary School in Madhya Pradesh’s Bahadurpur fell from a 12-foot bridge over the Sagad River in the Vidisha district, injuring at least 28 children.

The students were on a picnic trip to Sanchi when the accident took place. The bus had left the school premises at 8 am, and the accident took place at around 10:30 am in the Nateran police station area, according to NDTV. The driver reportedly steered the bus towards the edge of the bridge while giving way to another vehicle, before losing control.

“A school bus carrying students for a Sanchi picnic fell into the Johad river in Vidisha’s Nateran area. Around 42 students were on board, and several have sustained injuries. Rescue operations were carried out immediately, and the seriously injured have been shifted to Vidisha Medical College for treatment," said Dr. Narayan, BMO, Vidisha Medical College.

Officials rescued the children from the damaged bus, and they were promptly rushed to nearby hospitals. Several of them suffered fractures to their hands and legs, and 4-5 students were hospitalised with serious injuries at the Vidisha Medical College.

Around 35 children were later sent back safely to their homes after medical examination. Officials from the state education department and district administration were present to oversee the medical care and transportation of the students.

BJP MLA Mukesh Tandon said nine injured children were referred from Ganj Basoda to Vidisha Medical College, while the condition of the remaining students is stable, NDTV reported. Tandon said the children hailed from the Ashoknagar district and were on an educational trip. “Fortunately, there has been no loss of life in this accident," he said.
