474 kg of gutkha seized, five held in Cuddalore

A special team of the Cuddalore district police seized 474 kgs of gutkha smuggled from Bengaluru and arrested five persons in this connection at Koothapakkam near here on Saturday (May 31, 2025) night.

Following a tip-off, a team were on patrol in Koothapakkam when they noticed a group loading banned gutkha and tobacco products from an SUV into a car in front of a house. The team searched the vehicles and seized 348 kg of gutkha products.

The police arrested three persons identified as Babu, Ayyan Perumal and Saravanan for smuggling the contraband from Bengaluru. Based on their confession, the police arrested Ananthamani of Karaikadu and Immanuel of Sangolikuppam and seized another 126 kg of gutkha from their possession.

The five were produced before a local court and remanded to custody.
