8-Year-Old Girl Dies After Falling Into Uncovered Drain, Swept For 50 Meters In UP’s Gorakhpur

An 8-year-old girl, Afreen, fell into a drain in Gorakhpur, UP, amid heavy rains. Locals found her body 50 meters downstream. She was taken to the hospital but declared dead.

In a tragic incident, an eight-year-old girl fell into a drain on her way home from school and was swept 50 metres away before her body was retrieved by locals in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur.

Amid heavy rains and flooding in Gorakhpur on Monday, Afreen was walking back home. As both the road and the under-construction drain were submerged in water, she walked along the drain’s slab.

At one place, the drain was uncovered, causing Afreen to fall into it as her younger brother cried for help. Locals rushed to rescue the girl, but her body had been swept 50 metres downstream, NDTV reported.

Viral videos showed a man pulling the girl out of the drain by her leg and later performing CPR. When she remained unresponsive, another local picked her up and rushed her to the hospital amid rain, where she was declared dead.

According to Afreen’s father, Anish Qureshi, a labourer, his daughter had desired to study and was admitted to a madrasa. He said she had dreamed of becoming a doctor. While his wife, Aasman, remained inconsolable, Anish held the contractor’s negligence responsible for their daughter’s death.
