Members of various organisations staged a protest against the State government for suspending government primary school teacher Veeranna Madiwalar who earlier protested seeking additional schoolrooms in Nidagundi in Belagavi district.

Activists in Haveri submitted a petition to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Madhu Bangarappa through the Tahsildar office demanding revocation of Mr. Madiwalar’s suspension and also not recording the suspension in his service records.

Why should a teacher be suspended for raising his voice seeking allocation of funds for rooms in his school? It is condemnable. The State government should immediately revoke his suspension and fulfil his demand for construction of schoolrooms, they said.

Members of progressive organisations submitted a memorandum to the Tahsildar office on Saturday.

DYFI secretary Basavaraj Poojara, writer Satish Kulkarni, retired officer M. Anjaneya, DSS District president Udachappa Malgi, All India Lawyers Federation leader Narayana Kale, Farmers Organization leaders Ramanna Kenchallera, Suresh Chalavadi, M. Qalandar and others were present.

AIDSO has condemned the government’s move, calling it insensitive. The teacher who has been serving in that school for the past nine years has worked hard for the development of the school with the help of his friends and the people of the village. Realizing the hardships of students, he has approached the department through proper channels many a time for allocation of rooms. But he did not succeed. He was constrained to protest after all these measures failed, it said.

AIDSO has urged the State government to immediately reverse this decision, re-deploy the teacher and urgently arrange for rooms in the school. AIDSO has appealed to students, parents, teachers and the general public of the town and the district to raise their voices against this undemocratic and anti-educational move of the government, said district coordinator in a letter to the government Mahantesh Bilur.
