Kochi Metro Freight Services: After Delhi, Kochi Metro Rail is preparing to launch freight services on its network. The initiative comes in line with the Central Government’s directive to introduce cargo operations across all metro systems in the country.
Earlier in March, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) signed an MoU with Blue Dart for urban logistics. The Kochi Metro’s freight services will be modelled on DMRC’s framework.
Kochi Metro Cargo Service
The Kochi Metro cargo service will be available during non-peak hours for the transport of non-perishable, packaged goods, ensuring that passenger convenience is not affected. The move will significantly benefit Kochi’s business community and provide KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Limited) with an additional revenue stream. This will also enable faster transportation of goods in the city.
Cargo Services via Metro Trains
The cargo and logistics services via metro trains will not only reduce dependency on road transport but also ease congestion and curb vehicular emissions.
“Globally, metro systems are increasingly exploring ways to utilize spare capacity to generate revenue while promoting sustainability. For instance, Madrid Metro has initiated a pilot project in collaboration with logistic partners to transport parcels via metro trains, thereby reducing road traffic and pollution. DMRC is actively engaging with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices in urban freight transportation,” the DMRC said in a statement earlier.
