Pakistan’s political landscape is set for another seismic shift as the country’s military establishment and federal government prepare to initiate treason charges against former Prime Minister Imran Khan under the Official Secrets Act and other military laws. According to sources, consultations led by the federal Law Ministry are underway to draft a comprehensive lawsuit, making the civilian government a formal party to the proceedings.

The latest development follows the conviction of former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd.) Faiz Hameed, who was recently sentenced to 14 years by a Field General Court Martial. Top security officials told CNN-News18 that testimonies and evidence emerging during Gen Faiz’s trial have provided “grounds" to pursue a military court trial against Imran Khan. These inputs, the officials said, directly link the former prime minister to alleged attempts to destabilise the state and incite political agitation.

The military, according to these sources, has been examining evidence against Khan and several of his close aides, including some senior military officials. A broader investigation is ongoing, and once the probe concludes, formal charges are expected to be framed. Trials would then begin in military courts under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act and relevant military statutes.

An ISPR statement issued earlier, referring to Gen Faiz’s case, noted that the convict’s “involvement in fomenting vested political agitation and instability in cahoots with political elements" was being addressed in separate proceedings—language that sources interpret as a reference to the ongoing scrutiny of Imran Khan and PTI leadership.

The charges likely to be brought against Khan include treason, instigating mutiny, and orchestrating or encouraging attacks on military installations and strategic assets during the May 9, 2023 violence. These allegations stem from widespread unrest that erupted following Khan’s arrest that year. On May 7, 2025, Pakistan’s Supreme Court delivered a landmark ruling allowing civilians involved in the May 9 riots to be tried in military courts.

Meanwhile, political pressure around Khan continues to mount. The Punjab Assembly has already passed a resolution seeking his trial for treason and calling for a ban on his party, PTI. Khan remains incarcerated following multiple convictions: 14 years in the Toshakhana case, seven years in the Iddat case, and 14 years in the Al-Qadir Trust case, in addition to several FIRs linked to the May 9 violence.
