Days after irate residents engaged in a scuffle over water entering their homes in Yakutpura in the presence of legislator Jafar Hussain Meraj, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) sought to assuage public anger by assuring a swift resolution of the pending nala work and promising compensation to affected house-owners.
Mild tension was palpable near the Madina Nagar area of Yakutpura Assembly constituency after Mr Meraj, acting on complaints of water-logging, visited the locality to take stock of the situation. Nala construction work was underway in the area. Unhappy with the delay, locals confronted him, resulting in a heated exchange. The legislator was eventually escorted away by security personnel and party workers. Later, a case was registered against certain individuals involved in the incident.
In a video message released later, Mr Meraj described nala construction as a time-taking process. He noted that at least three major nalas -including the Murki Nala, which connects Pallam Cheruvu to the Musi -cut across the constituency, which results in substantial complications.
Subsequently, AIMIM convened a meeting with residents at its headquarters in Darussalam. The legislator and party functionaries explained that the scale of the nala project was significant and assured that the works would be completed by the year-end. Mr. Meraj also clarified that widening of the nala necessitates diversion, and said the party would ensure that house-owners affected by inundation and property damage would be compensated.
On Wednesday, the legislator, and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan visited the locality to assess the situation firsthand.
Sources said that the Yakutpura constituency, since the last assembly elections, is being closely watched by the AIMIM leadership. It is from here that the party won with a slim margin. Efforts are underway to take constituents into confidence, and complete overdue civic work.
