Airtel becomes first telco to offer improved mobile connectivity on Vidyasagar Setu

Bharti Airtel is the first telecom company to improve mobile network coverage on Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge). This is a well-known bridge that connects the cities of Kolkata and Howrah.

The company has set up more than 5,250 new network sites across West Bengal over the last 3 years, delivering faster speeds, more exhaustive coverage, and a significantly improved network experience for customers. This deployment ensures uninterrupted voice and data services for thousands of commuters who cross the bridge daily, reinforcing Airtel's commitment to connectivity, even in challenging environments.Completed in close collaboration with the Government of West Bengal, including the PWD, the West Bengal Police Traffic Department, and the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC), the project demonstrates how public-private partnerships can build digital infrastructure for urban mobility.

How Airtel is improving mobile connectivity on Vidyasagar Setu

Airtel has laid 1.3 km of fibre across the entire stretch of Vidyasagar Setu, with network antennas deployed over 6 poles, ensuring consistent coverage and zero drop zones.Realising the significance of better digital connectivity for commuters, the officials of the West Bengal Government appreciated the initiative taken by Airtel, saying that Vidyasagar Setu is a crucial daily route for thousands of commuters between Kolkata and Howrah.

Having reliable and constant mobile connectivity along this route improves the commuter experience by allowing them to navigate through traffic, stay connected while on the move, access digital services seamlessly, and feel secure during emergencies. With this initiative, Airtel continues to lead network innovation in West Bengal, investing in roads, bridges, transport hubs, and public spaces that form the backbone of urban life.Commenting on the announcement, Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel, West Bengal and Odisha, said, “This deployment showcases Airtel’s engineering strength and our commitment to enabling smart infrastructure for the city. Vidyasagar Setu is one of Kolkata’s busiest transport corridors, and uninterrupted connectivity here is critical—not just for commuters, but for emergency services, traffic management, and public safety. Airtel is proud to make this possible.”
