Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed on Tuesday in a strike by Israel. According to Iranian state media, Larijani was killed while he was at his daughter’s house in the Pardis area.

As per the media reports, the attack also claimed the lives of his son, a deputy, and several bodyguards.

Confirming his death on Wednesday, Iran labelled him a martyr and honoured his role in shaping the country’s defence and regional policies. Notably, Ali Larijani was not just another senior official; he was widely described as a “backroom powerbroker" and architect of Iran’s security policy.

Analysts suggest that Larijani effectively oversaw the country’s defence strategy, regional operations, and internal security after the late leader, especially during the recent tensions.

Soon after confirming the death of the security chief, the Iranian army on Wednesday threatened to launch a “decisive and regrettable" retaliation against Israel.

“Iran’s response to the assassination of the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council will be decisive and regrettable," Iranian army chief Amir Hatami said in a statement.

The Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s powerful military force that is separate from the army, said in a statement that it had launched missiles at central Israel “in revenge for the blood of martyr Dr Ali Larijani and his companions".

Israel’s Strategic Target

Israel confirmed it had carried out the strike that killed Larijani along with General Gholam Reza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary force.

Israeli officials stated that the operation was aimed at “undermining the Iranian regime" and giving the people of Iran an opportunity to challenge their leaders.

Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesman, Brigadier General Effie Defrin, said that it will continue targeting anyone who “poses a threat to the state of Israel", including Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.

When asked about Khamenei’s whereabouts, Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin said that they have no current information on Khamenei’s whereabouts.

“But I can say one thing: we will continue, as we have proven, we will continue to pursue anyone who poses a threat to the state of Israel, and anyone who raises a hand against it is not immune from us. We will pursue him, find him, and neutralise him," Defrin said.
