Alysa Liu opens up about stepping away from World Figure Skating Championships and recalls painful training years
Only a few weeks before the withdrawal, Alysa Liu sounded very excited about her future in skating. During the closing ceremony of the Milan Winter Games, she spoke openly about continuing her career.
At that time she said, “Yeah, I mean, I have no plans to leave yet. I can’t imagine not skating the next year, so…”She also shared how much she loves competing, adding, “I love being an athlete. It’s the coolest thing in the world.”Because of those comments, many fans believed she would head straight into the World Championships in Prague. Her presence would have been a big moment because she won the world title in Boston the previous year.
That victory had already made her one of the most exciting skaters in the sport.Still, people who have followed Alysa Liu’s journey closely know that her path in skating has never been simple. Behind the medals and big performances, she went through very difficult training years while growing up.In an interview with Rolling Stone, Liu once spoke honestly about those tough days. She explained how strict training and pressure affected her as a young athlete. She said, “Probably because [that time in my life] was so bad, I just didn’t want to remember it. Practice was so serious. I would cry after falling on every jump. The team I had around me was so strict. I was in fight-or-flight mode all the time.”The daily routine became overwhelming for her. She also shared that she missed many normal childhood moments.“I missed birthdays and holidays, so that also makes the timeline a little bit sketchy for me.
There’s no pinpoints,” Liu said.Even her father later admitted he regretted sending her to live alone in Colorado Springs for training when she was still very young. For now, Alysa Liu appears to be taking a short break while enjoying the success from the Milan Games. And if her message to fans is any sign, she plans to return next season with fresh energy and a clear mind.
