Ambedkar built the Constitution based on Buddhist values, says SC judge

“B.R. Ambedkar created the Constitution using the basic ethical and spiritual principles of Buddhism,” judge of the Supreme Court Prasanna Varale said in Chikkodi on Sunday (December 21, 2025).

“Dr. Ambedkar had suffered great pain under the discriminatory caste system. The influence of Lord Buddha on him helped him find new light. It was this influence that helped him create the Constitution. Today, its ethical principles are admired around the world. It is a matter of pride for all of us,” Mr. Varale said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed court complex and bar association building. The complex is built at a cost of ₹32 crore. The function was organised in collaboration with the District Judiciary, Public Works Department and the Chikkodi Bar Association. He said the mural of Dr. Ambedkar handing over the Constitution of India to the Constituent Assembly in the new court building had brought new vitality to the complex.

He recalled the close association of Dr. Ambedkar with his father. “Guided by him, our father gave all of us a good education. That is why he was able to become a Supreme Court judge,’’ he said. Justice Varale and his wife, Geeta Varale, were felicitated.

Justice Vibhu Bakhru, Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka, who presided over the program, said that it was a matter of pride that there were five courts in Chikkodi. “The court complex has been built keeping in mind the judges, clients and lawyers,” he said.

District In-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi said the government was constructing new buildings for several courts in the state. He said a separate building for women lawyers would be constructed at a cost of ₹2 crore on the newly constructed Chikkodi Bar Association. He said a bridge connecting Krishna Kittur and Khemalapur would be built at a cost of ₹70 crore.

Minister H.K. Patil, who participated as the chief guest, said the new complex had a childcare centre to help litigants and women staff. He described the new Civil Procedure Code (CPC) brought in the State for the speedy disposal of civil cases, calling it a bold step by the State.

B. Patil , Taluk Bar Association Secretary R. B. Hittalamani and others were present.
