India’s Anupama Ramachandran maintained her composure under pressure to defeat Hong Kong’s Ng On Yee and secure the World Snooker title on Thursday.

The 23-year-old from Chennai narrowly beat On Yee 3-2 to become the first Indian woman to win the IBSF World Snooker (15-red) crown.

Anupama, who claimed the Asian snooker title last year, had a stroke of luck towards the end when On Yee, a three-time champion, missed the final black with the score at 60-61 in the deciding frame.

Anupama successfully potted the difficult black ball into the bottom left-hand pocket to claim the title.

The Indian star, who eliminated compatriot Keerthana Pandian 3-1 in the semifinals late on Wednesday night, twice mounted spirited comebacks in the best-of-five frame final.

She equalised after losing the first frame and, trailing 1-2 in the fourth, produced a determined 29-break under pressure to level the frame scores.

In the deciding frame, Anupama potted a long red into the top right-hand pocket and snookered herself three times. However, On Yee failed to take advantage of the opportunity.

Leading 61-42 with just 25 points remaining on the table, Anupama played a poor safety shot on the green ball — which was stuck to the pink near the green cushion — giving her rival a chance to close out the match.

Fortunately for Anupama, On Yee, who had potted the green, brown, blue, and pink balls, missed an easy black. Anupama then sank the black ball to emerge as the champion.

Results: Women: Final: Anupama Ramachandran (Ind) bt Ng On Yee (HKC) 3-2 (51-74, 65-41, 10-71, 78-20, 68-60).
