The Andhra Pradesh Government has accorded permission to hand over several Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department roads within the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) limits to the civic body for maintenance purposes. Orders to this effect were issued by M.T. Krishna Babu, Special Chief Secretary to Transport, Roads and Buildings Department, through G.O. Rt. No. 663 dated December 24, 2025.

The decision follows requests from the Guntur District Collector, the GMC Commissioner and recommendations from the Engineer-in-Chief (R&B), State Roads, Vijayawada. As per the order, the roads will be transferred to the GMC strictly for maintenance under “as is where is” conditions.

The handover covers major district roads and State highways spanning several key arterial stretches in the city. These include portions of the Madras–Calcutta Road, JKC College–Ponnekallu Road, GMC limits to NSP Canal via Pedapalakaluru-Mallavaram-Bandarupalli road, and roads connecting M-C Road to G-P link road and Nidamarru via Kantheru.

Important State highways such as Guntur–Chirala Road, Guntur–Parchuru Road, Guntur–Amaravathi Road and Guntur–Hanumanpalem Road are also included.

The total length of roads handed over runs into several kilometres, covering critical urban traffic corridors. The government directed the Engineer-in-Chief (R&B), the Guntur District Collector and the GMC Commissioner to take further necessary action to implement the order. The move is to streamline road maintenance and improve urban infrastructure management in Guntur city, Puli Srinivasulu, Commissioner, GMC told The Hindu on Thursday (December 25, 2025) here.
