Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently retired from international cricket, has shared some thought-provoking comments on the way the current generation approaches films. While the film 'Coolie', starring director Lokesh Kanagaraj and actor Rajinikanth, had created great expectations even before its release, it courted mixed, mostly negative reviews upon its theatrical release. In this context, Ravichandran
Ashwin
has critically addressed the culture of online criticism and how today's audiences evaluate films.
Ashwin reflects on ‘Coolie’ reviews and social media influence
Speaking with Galata about the initial reception of the film 'Coolie', Ashwin openly stated, "I have a problem with the way the slogan 'this film is not good enough' has been raised." He said that when the film was playing in theaters, he also wondered if the negative comments on social media had affected him. That's why he asked him if he had skipped watching the film in theaters, and then, when he watched the film in its entirety during its digital release, he didn't think there were any major flaws in it.
Former cricketer differentiates between critics’ views and audience experience
Ashwin also noted that he watched the film in one sitting without even a break, which is a key sign of a film's appeal. In particular, he pointed out that today's Gen Z generation approaches images with a very quick judgmental mindset, magnifying even small flaws and spreading them on social media. His question, “Am I being guided by the opinions I see online?” reflects the mindset of today's audience. While Ashwin accepted that film critics can find flaws professionally, he said that when watching the film as a casual viewer, the flaws didn't bother him that much.
Ashwin, an ardent fan of Rajinikanth, has openly praised the superstar many times. It is also noteworthy that, like him, director Lokesh Kanagaraj himself issued a clarification against the criticism of 'Coolie' and asked fans not to have excessive expectations.
Ashwin's love for Tamil films
“My biggest passion is cinema, especially Tamil cinema,” said Ashwin. He also said that he is eager to watch
Vijay
and Ajith’s films when they are released in theatres. He said that the beauty of cinema is that it is a place where people learn about life through the stories of others, rather than its commercial value.
