Mohammad Nabi slammed 5 sixes in an over as he dragged Afghanistan from the brink on a collapse and helped them post an imposing total of 169/8 against Sri Lanka in their must-win Group B match on Thursday. The unlucky bowler on the receiving end was Dunith Wellalage who ironically had dropped Nabi in single digits earlier in the match.

The blitzkrieg came in the last over with Wellalage missing his length off the first ball only for Nabi to hammer it over long off for the first 6. With the pressure building, the second ball also was smacked over deep mid-wicket for the second maximum of the over.

The next sixer was struck down the ground after which it went for bad to worse for the bowler as Wellalage overstepped and gave away a free hit which was duly tonked over wide long off before the carnage was ended after the 5th six which was played over the cow corner. With 6 sixes a real possibility, the bowler finally got some reprieve as Nabi couldn’t get it over the ropes to keep it down to 2 runs.

Meanwhile, Nuwan Thushara took 4/18 but Mohammad Nabi’s late 22-ball 60 pushed Afghanistan to 169/8 against Sri Lanka. Afghanistan could never recover from early blows dealt by Thushara who rocked them thrice in the powerplay, and accounted for Rashid Khan (24) later for his fourth wicket in the contest.
Ibrahim Zadran made a 27-ball 24 but it was Nabi’s innings, studded with six sixes including five in the final over along with three fours, which gave Afghanistan some late and crucial runs on the board.

The 32 runs conceded by Dunith Wellalage was the second-most expensive over for Sri Lanka in T20Is after 36 by Akila Dananjaya who was smacked for six sixes by Kieron Pollard in Antigua in 2021.

Brief scores: Afghanistan 169/7 in 20 overs (Ibrahim Zadran 24, Mohammad Nabi 60, Rashid Khan 24; Nuwan Thushara 4/18) vs Sri Lanka.
