Alphabet’s video-communication platform, Google Meet, experienced a widespread outage across the US on Monday, leaving thousands of users unable to access services, according to tracking website Downdetector.com.

As of 1:33 pm ET, more than 17,000 outage reports were logged on Downdetector, which monitors service disruptions by aggregating status updates and user-submitted complaints from various sources. The disruption affected users in multiple regions, including major cities like San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Google confirmed the service issues in its Workflow Status update, stating that “affected customers are experiencing slow user interface loads and are unable to join Meet sessions." The problems appeared to be primarily concentrated on the platform’s core functionality, video conferencing.

According to Downdetector’s breakdown, 79% of users experienced issues while starting a conference, 16% faced server connection problems, and the remaining 5% had trouble connecting via the app itself.

The issue was resolved later in the afternoon. By 3:48 pm ET, reports of problems had dropped significantly, with only around 180 ongoing complaints. Google later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a “recent change in content edge cache." The company rolled back the update, which successfully restored normal service.
