Asian Athletics Championships: Rupal, Pooja, Yoonus Add To India's Medal Tally

Rupal Chaudhary clocked 52.68 seconds to finish second in the women's 400m, while Pooja's 4:10.83sec effort helped her to the women's 1500m to silver.

The Indian contingent participating at the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea took their tally to 5 medals on Monday as 400m runner Rupal Chaudhary and 1500m runner Pooja bagged silver medals, while Yoonus Shah added a bronze in the men’s 1500m event.

Rupal clocked 52.68 seconds to finish second in the women’s 400m final. Japan’s Nanako Matsumoto finished in 52.17s to clinch the yellow metal, while Uzbekistan’s Jonbibi Hukmova timed 52.79s earned the bronze. India’s Vithya Ramraj came in fifth with a time of 53.00 seconds.

Pooja timed 4:10.83sec in the women’s 1500m to come in second, ahead of Lili Das, who finished fourth in 4:13.81sec. China’s Li Chunhui and Japan’s Tomaka Kimura claimed the gold and bronze medals, respectively, with timings of 4:10.58 and 4:11.56.

In the men’s section, Shah bagged the bronze with a time of 3:43.03, behind Japan’s Kazuto Lizawa, who clocked a PB of 3:42.56 and South Korean Jaeung Lee, who timed 3:42.79.

In the men’s 400m section, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi produced a personal best of 45.57s, but finished fourth, just outside the podium places.

Long jumpers Shaili Singh, had a best effort 6.17m, and Ancy Sojan, who registered a jump of 6.14m, qualified for the final of the event.

Jyoti Yarraji moved into the subsequent round of her hurdles event, by clocking a time of 13.18secs, to finish third in her heat.

India’s Gulveer Singh claimed the gold medal in the 10,000m event, while Servin Sebastian bagged the 20km race walk bronze on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Rupal, who entered history books as she became the first Indian athlete to clinch two medals at the World U20 Athletics Championships in 2022 with a silver in the 4x400m relay and a bronze in the women’s 400m event, hails from a family of farmer in Shahpur Jainpur village in UP’s Meerut district.
