Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that the state government will issue arms licences to indigenous people living in minority-dominated areas for their security.

The announcement came after a Cabinet meeting, where the proposal was approved.

The Cabinet cleared a special scheme for granting arms licences to indigenous citizens in vulnerable and remote areas of Assam, where they are reportedly facing ongoing threats.

Applicants will be required to meet specific criteria, including having no criminal background, in order to be eligible for a licence.
