Australian police thwarted a possible “violent act" in Sydney, just days after a mass shooting at Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead. Police intercepted two vehicles in southwest Sydney after receiving intelligence suggesting a violent act was being planned, AFP reported. Tactical officers stopped the cars in Liverpool and detained multiple individuals.
“As investigations continue, seven men are assisting police with their inquiries," police said in a statement quoted by AFP. Authorities added that, at this stage, they have not established any link between the latest tip-off and the ongoing investigation into the Bondi Beach attack.
The development comes amid heightened security across Australia following the shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Australian police commissioner Krissy Barrett described that attack as “a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State."
New South Wales police, however, cautioned that it was too early to draw conclusions about any wider network or immediate connections between the two incidents.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed a renewed crackdown on extremism as the nation mourned the youngest victim of the Bondi Beach shooting.
“It is clear we need to do more to combat this evil scourge," Anthony Albanese said, announcing steps to tackle what he described as “the evil of antisemitism." The measures under consideration include new powers to target extremist preachers, cancel or refuse visas to individuals spreading hate and criminalise “serious vilification" at the federal level. The government is also considering a formal mechanism to list organisations whose leaders engage in hate speech.
The Bondi Beach shooting has been described as Australia’s worst mass shooting in nearly three decades. Police said the attack was carried out by a father and son, targeting Jewish Australians. One of the accused, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was killed during an altercation with police, while his 24-year-old son Naveed remains in critical condition in hospital under police guard.
Anthony Albanese called the shooting a “targeted attack" and condemned it as “an act of evil, antisemitism and terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation."
