 ‘Work isn’t finished at all’

Actress Ayo Edebiri, who has risen to fame with her role on ‘The Bear’, recently shared her viewpoints on some social issues during an interview. The actress talked about the #MeToo movement as well as the Black Lives Matter movement, emphasizing that the “work isn’t done”.

Her comments since then have gone viral, especially due to the fact that the question about these issues was directed at her co-stars Andrew Garfield and Julia Roberts.

Ayo Edebiri says the work is not done with Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements

Ayo Edebiri, along with Andrew Garfield and Julia Roberts, has been on a press tour for their latest film, ‘After the Hunt’. During one such press tour, The Art Life interview with Federica Polidoro was held recently. A question from the host about Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movement prompted Edebiri to provide an elaborate answer.During the interview, the host directed a question specifically towards Garfield and Roberts, asking, “Now that the #MeToo era and the Black Lives Matter are done, what [do] we have to expect in Hollywood and what we lost if we lost something with the politically correct era?”The question prompted a reaction from Edebiri, who then raised her hand and provided an elaborate answer as to why 'the work is not done' regarding the social movements.

She started by saying that although she knows the question is not directed at her, she would still like to answer. She continued, saying, “I don’t know if it’s purposeful that it’s not for me, but I just am curious. I don’t think it’s done. I don’t think it’s done at all. I think maybe hashtags might not be used as much, but I do think that there’s work being done by activists, by people, every day, that’s beautiful, important work that’s not finished, that’s really, really, really active for a reason, because this world is really charged.

And that work isn’t finished at all”.

She elaborated further by saying that there might not be regular coverage about the matters and actions at hand at the moment. She added that while the coverage isn’t there, it does not mean that the movements are gone, as there are still things going on around the world.Garfield then added on to his co-star’s statement, saying, “movements are still absolutely alive, as you say, just maybe not as labeled or covered or magnified as much”.

Interviewer's question sparks major reactions online

Soon after the interview was shared online, netizens and fans of the actress shared their strong reactions online. One comment about the matter read, “first of all... if you are talking about MeToo, why ask Andrew and exclude a woman sitting there?”, while another post about the situation stated, “From the phrasing of the question to who it was intended for, everything about this interaction is so European”.
