The BJP launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government, calling the death of 11 persons in a stampede in Bengaluru during the RCB victory celebrations as ‘gross administrative failure.’

Addressing reporters here on Thursday, senior BJP functionary M.A. Mohan sought the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. “It is being described as a tragic accident, but I call it a murder,” he said.

Pointing out that despite widespread anticipation and media hype ahead of the IPL final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings and the celebrations that followed RCB’s victory late on Tuesday night, Mr. Mohan said no adequate safety measures were put in place for the victory parade in Bengaluru.

He said that thousands had gathered in Bengaluru to watch the final on giant screens and later joined celebrations that lasted till 4 a.m. “The police were already overworked managing these crowds, and just hours later the Chief Minister announced felicitation in a display of disregard for the well-being of police personnel,” he said.

The decision to hold the felicitation ceremony at Vidhana Soudha came under flak and the BJP said there were no invites to the Opposition. “It was only for Ministers, their children, and family members,” said Mr. Mohan.

He said the Congress government in Telangana registered an FIR against actor Allu Arjun after a stampede during a movie promotion in Hyderabad last year. Now, who will be held responsible for the 11 deaths, he questioned.
