A 63-year-old man from Horamavu in Bengaluru has been cheated of more than Rs 32 lakh in a WhatsApp-based dating scam. The fraudsters allegedly lured him with the promise of meeting “high-society women" through what they claimed was an exclusive dating service.
As per the police, the scam took place between September 5 and October 18 this year. The man realised he had been tricked and filed a complaint with the East CEN Crime Police on October 23.
According to The Times of India report, the victim reportedly received a WhatsApp message from people posing as representatives of a premium dating agency that offered introductions to “elite women."
They first asked him to pay a small registration fee of around Rs 1,950 to join the service. Once he paid, the scammers sent him photos of three women and asked him to choose one.
He selected a woman identifying herself as Ritika and began chatting with her regularly on WhatsApp. Ritika soon promised to meet him in person. However, just before Dussehra, she claimed she was visiting family and introduced him to another woman named Priti, who would supposedly make the meeting arrangements.
Thereafter, the man was asked to pay a series of “processing fees," “coordination charges," “membership upgrades," and other service costs to finalise the meeting. Each time he sent money, the fraudsters demanded more, citing fresh reasons or formalities.
Believing he was close to meeting Ritika, the victim kept transferring money in several instalments to different bank accounts. Over six weeks, he ended up losing around Rs 32.2 lakh. When he refused to pay further, the scammers allegedly threatened him — leading him to realise he had been duped.
Police have registered a case under the Information Technology Act and Section 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators are now tracing the flow of money and working to identify those behind the racket.
